Short definition: Federation is when servers connect to each other in a peer-to-peer decentralized network using a common protocol.
Long definition: Federation is when servers connect to each other in a peer-to-peer decentralized network using a common protocol. This allows users on each server to access the content on other servers without a central coordination authority or single point of failure. Some examples of federation protocols are ActivityPub and ATProto.
