Short definition: Running an operating system directly on physical hardware, with no hypervisor or virtualization layer in between.
Long definition: A bare-metal installation runs the OS directly on the device (e.g. Home Assistant OS on a Raspberry Pi) rather than as a virtual machine or container on a host system.
